Mission: Prologue
Location: USS Guinevere
Timeline: 2388

Master Chief Petty Officer Julian Trent had reported aboard enough ships to know that first impressions were mostly theatre. Clean uniform, polished boots, transfer orders presented to Operations and Command, and the correct expression of respectful competence while somebody senior decided whether the file matched the man. Julian could do all of that. At fifty, he was tall and lean, built in long, wiry lines rather than anything particularly broad. He wore his hair short, fully aware that it added a severity to him which suited the rank well, while the facial hair along his jaw was kept neatly within regulation. The gold of Tactical sat neatly across his shoulders, his rank insignia was straight and his boots were polished, but none of it mattered as much as people liked to pretend.

The ship, the Guinevere, seemed a sensible posting, and the Commodore in command had a remarkable reputation. Of course, neither the spit and shine nor the reputation mattered that much to Julian as he walked towards the Ready Room. No...Julian had seen people die because there had not been enough time to teach them properly, watched others earn promotions and become exactly the officers their crews needed, and seen good people leave because, somewhere between the losses, the orders and the speeches about duty, they had stopped believing any of it meant something.

Enlisted or officer, it made no difference to him. Juniors needed training, honesty and somebody willing to notice when they were struggling before it became a problem everyone else had to survive. That was the job, as far as Julian was concerned, while the immaculate uniform mostly told people who to blame when it went wrong. He stopped outside the Commodore's Ready Room, settled the PADD beneath one arm and pressed the chime, waiting with the relaxed confidence of a man who knew he could do the work.

Elias had been working all morning on charts and administration tasks and the work at hand had turned into a working lunch. A very large garden salad that was covered in various proteins, bacon and steak, various shredded cheeses and a ranch dressing. He had picked up another PADD with one hand and a bite of salad on a fork with his dominant hand when the chime went off. He jumped in his skin just enough to drop the fork onto his lap. He grumbled softly as he took the napkin that was over one leg to wipe himself off as he called.

"Yeah, come in"

Trent walked in, eyes going to the large Caitian. He walked to the desk and straightened into attention. "Commodore, Master Chief Petty Officer Trent reporting for duty," he said, before presenting the PADD, already preloaded and ready with his transfer orders.

Elias looked over the man, He was a stern one, he could tell by the eyes. That blank expression of competent professionalism and something more...haunted. Loss, possibly. He had seen that look staring back through the mirror himself after Wolf 359, after the Dominion War and before he met Gil.

"Stand at ease Master Chief." He nodded as he took up the PADD that was being presented to him.

Trent relaxed his stance and with it, the expression relaxed a fraction. It also allowed him a moment to appreciate the amount of food it took to feed the Commodore. "Yes, Commodore," he said, voice slightly rough, the accent softened a little by time but still marking him as from Earth.

Elias took a moment to look over the PADD, scrolling through his service record. Elias stopped several times at various points. Trent was a veteran of Wolf 359. He had suffered great loss in the Dominion War. Elias saw common ground.

"Ya want to sit down and tell me in your own words how you've kept yourself going." He asked pointently. He wanted to know the man, see if the scars and the horrors haven't consumed him internally.

Trent looked at him before raising an eyebrow. He nodded and moved to sit down, his posture still good, but with something more relaxed in the way he settled into the chair. He took a slow breath, knowing the man across from him had read his file. "Just got out of bed, washed, put the uniform on and reported to my station," he said, meeting his eyes because he knew the man did not deserve a lie. "Repetition. And watching the young ones, making sure they stay sane." He gave a small shrug, a smile pulling at his lips before it became something more, almost a grin. "I wish I could give you something more philosophical, Sir. Or healthier."

"That is the best we can do." Elias commented before he leaned back a bit.

"We both seen things that most shouldn't have and I will admit that reading your record made me think of my own. We have a similar history."

He watched Elias closely at the words before he gave a small nod, realising they were closer in age than he had first thought. Caitians were difficult for him to decide ages of, but the rank...well. Did the job, didn't it? "Bad decisions, bad situations and somehow managing to survive it?" he said, and there was a hint of humour in it. Because there was little choice.

"Exactly." Elias quipped.

"Not goin lie, Master Chief, goin need your head on a swivel for some of the things down the road. You're senior Non-Com so I need you to make sure that the lower ratings and Junior NonComs are up to the standards of the Space Service."

Julian huffed a laugh at that before he gave a nod. "Can do. Seems a steady bunch, some younger ones might have too much shine and not enough sense, but that'll be...eased out of them soon enough, Commodore," he said and the smile he gave the Caitian was warm, somewhat respectful, and with a decent amount of world-weary realism. "Saw the Ground Forces when I came onboard. It's...different..." he didn't outright ask what had happened to kick Security off...he was just glad his specialism was Tactical, and he was certified for the Bridge.

Elias noticed the question that wasn’t asked. “Ground Forces are a Swiss Army knife. Not like Starfleet Security who really only focus on basic policing. Ourbprior contingent of Starfleet Security did not rise to the level of standard and loss my confidence.”

Loss of confidence, officer speak for relieve of duty and fired.

For a moment, Trent just watched him before he gave a small nod. "Hense the FGF walking the corridors...and the MPs," he said, lightly, but he understood it perfectly. "I won't step on their toes. They have their mission. And you've given me mine, Commodore McEntyre."

Elias nods. He didn't need to say more.

"Any questions then, Master Chief? Concerns? Anything you may need for the success of your assignment here?"

Julian considered it for a moment before giving a small nod. “Access to the training records and duty rotations would help, Commodore. Not just Tactical, if you want me keeping an eye on standards across the ship,” he said, settling back slightly in the chair. “And the freedom to speak to the department chiefs if I find something that needs fixing. I won’t interfere with anyone’s command, but junior crew don’t always tell officers when they’re struggling...usually because they think they’re hiding it better than they are.” His mouth pulled into a faint smile. “Other than that, give me a week. I’ll either know what I need by then, or have frightened everyone into behaving.”

"Ensign Wells, my yeoman will accommodate you on that regard. We will speak in a week. Thank you, Master Chief. Dismissed." Elias stood and extended a paw out for Juilian to shake.

"Welcome to the Guinevere, Master Chief"

Trent stood and took the paw, looking up at the impressive Commodore. "Thank you, Commodore. Look forward to serving," he said and meant it.
